Structure, Ethics, and the Quiet Work of Building Something That Lasts
There’s a framework I’ve been thinking about lately in the context of hypnosis businesses.
It comes from a book I read some time ago called Clockwork: Design Your Business to Run Itself by Mike Michalowicz.
At its core, the idea is simple:
Most business owners spend the majority of their time doing.
Many get stuck in constant deciding.
Some eventually move into delegating.
Very few ever slow down enough to truly design their business.
I see this pattern clearly in hypnosis practices.
Not just in time management, but in nervous system load.
Not just in income, but in sustainability.
Not just in growth, but in ethics.
In the next edition, I’ll be unpacking how the concepts of doing, deciding, delegating, and designing apply specifically to hypnosis businesses, and why skipping the design phase is often what keeps talented practitioners feeling scattered, overextended, or quietly burned out.
For now, I’m curious:
Have you read Clockwork?
Are you familiar with this framework?
Or does the idea of designing your business, instead of constantly running it, spark something for you?
If you’d like to read or revisit the book before the next issue, consider this a gentle heads-up. And if not, no worries at all. We’ll be using the concepts going forward in a way that stands on their own, grounded in real hypnosis business realities.
What's Happenin'
Over the past week, a lot of meaningful work has been happening behind the scenes.
Much of our focus has been on the Hypnosis Business Virtual Summit 2026, happening June 6–7. It is shaping up to be a powerful gathering of hypnosis professionals who are not only skilled practitioners, but thoughtful business owners.
We are honored to have Steve G. Jones opening day one as our keynote speaker, alongside an incredible lineup of experienced hypnotists who have built successful, ethical practices and are willing to share what has actually worked for them. Not theory. Not hype. Real-world insight.
At the same time, something equally important has been unfolding within the Hypnosis Education Association community.
You may have noticed posts inviting members to raise their hand for committees related to social media, branding, public relations, and conference presence. On the surface, those might look like “just business tasks.”
But they are more than that.
They are signals of a community moving from passive participation into shared stewardship.
Social media. Branding. Visibility. Presence at conferences. These are not separate from ethical hypnosis work. They are how our profession is represented. They are how trust is built with the public. They are how we protect the integrity of hypnosis while ensuring practitioners are properly supported and compensated.
This is also part of the larger transition underway as the Hypnosis Education Association moves toward 501c3 status. The timeline has stretched as we’ve balanced multiple priorities, but the direction is clear and the foundation is being laid with intention.
All of this connects back to something we’ve been talking about a lot lately.
Structure creates calm.
Ethics create sustainability.
And freedom does not come from doing everything yourself.
It comes from building systems and communities that can hold the work with you.
Watching members step forward, not just to comment or react, but to contribute their skills and energy, is a reminder that healthy organizations and healthy businesses are built the same way. With clarity. With shared responsibility. And with respect for the nervous systems of the people doing the work.
This is what forward movement actually looks like.
